The Garden Club of Palm Beach was one of 15 clubs in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina that served as hosts of the mid-April annual meeting and flower show of the Garden Club of America in Savannah.
Palm Beach Garden Clubbers were in charge of decorations for the three-day event, held April 15 to 17 at the Hyatt Regency Savannah hotel.
The theme of the meeting and show was, appropriately, “Southern Exposure.”
One of the most talked-about creations, designed by Palm Beacher Mary Pressly, was the “Southern Belle” that greeted attendees in the lobby of the hotel.
All the elements of the parasol-toting, elegantly dressed “Belle,” as Pressly calls her, are made of various plant materials.
Belle so impressed some local attendees that “she” will be put on display at Savannah’s Chatham Public Library for an extended period, Pressly said.
Several members of the Garden Club of Palm Beach also fared well with judges with their entries in various competitive classes at the annual meeting’s show.
Cindy Hoyt took first place for her modern-style arrangement.
Jean Matthews was awarded a first-place ribbon in the photography section for this dramatic image.
And Nancy Murray and Pressly received a second place ribbon and were presented with the Harriet DeWaele Puckett Creativity Award for their strikingly different “arrangement” entry.
